National Green Tribunal (NGT)
• NGT established on Oct 18, 2010, under the National Green Tribunal Act 2010.
• For effective and expeditious disposal of cases that are related to the protection and conservation of the environment, forests, and other natural resources.
• To give relief and compensation for any damage caused to persons and properties.
• NGT handle various environmental disputes that involve multi-disciplinary issues.
• Structure: The Chairperson, The Judicial Members, and The Expert Members to hold the office for 5 years and not eligible for reappointment.
• The Chairperson of the NGT is appointed by Central Government of India in accordance with the Chief Justice of India.
• It is an important body for regulation of the environment and passing strict orders on issues related to deforestation, pollution, water management, etc.
• It helps in the reduction of litigation burden on environmental matters in the Higher Courts and provides a faster for various environment-related disputes.
• NGT ensures the strict observation of the environmental impact assessment process and provides relief and compensation for any damages.
• NGT resolves various Civil Cases under the following laws:
1. Air Act (Prevention and Control of Pollution), 1981
2. Biological Diversity Act, 2002
3. Environment (Protection) Act, 1986
4. Forest Act (Conservation), 1980
5. Public Liability Insurance Act, 1986
6. Water Act (Prevention and Control of Pollution), 1974
7. Water Cess Act (Prevention and Control of Pollution), 1977
